Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suzana Laporšek hosted Mr. Dino Šterbin on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, who delivered a lecture to students about the purpose and functions of pension funds, demonstrating their operations through practical examples. Dino Šterbin is an experienced professional with over 15 years of experience in leadership positions within the financial and insurance industry. He also serves as the Director of the Marketing Sector at Triglav Pension Company, d.d.
During the lecture, Mr. Šterbin first presented the development of pension systems and the characteristics and structure of the pension system in Slovenia. He then focused on the second pillar of the pension system, which encompasses voluntary supplementary pension insurance. He explained the features and scope of this pillar and, using practical examples, covered investment opportunities, risks, and tax treatment within the voluntary supplementary pension system. In the final part of the lecture, he showcased the investment options offered by pension funds in Slovenia.
The lecture provided students with exceptional added value as it gave them insight into the practical functioning of pension funds—an invaluable experience for students who predominantly deal with the theoretical aspects of economics and finance. The guest speaker effectively connected theoretical foundations with real-life examples from the daily operations of financial institutions, equipping students with a deeper understanding of practical challenges in this field. Additionally, students had the opportunity to engage with current issues and challenges related to long-term investments and retirement savings and to discuss potential solutions.
Such lectures enable students to directly link theory with practice, while also encouraging them to reflect on significant societal and financial topics, such as long-term financial security.
