Associate Professor Matjaž Nahtigal at an International Conference in Shanghai on Cooperation Opportunities Between Central and Eastern European Countries and China

At the invitation of the Institute of European Studies of Tongji University in Shanghai, Assoc. Prof. Matjaž Nahtigal attended an international conference on the state and prospects of economic cooperation between Central and Eastern European countries and China. The conference was attended by experts in trade law and international relations, with a focus on the context of international trade uncertainties amid economic and financial imbalances and geopolitical disputes. Despite stagnation in economic, trade, and investment development across Central Europe, the conference highlighted opportunities for future economic cooperation. Among the opportunities are particularly the areas of renewable energy sources, logistics, digitalization, tourism, transport, and other business services.

Assoc. Prof. Matjaž Nahtigal emphasized in his contribution that the accumulated global trade and financial imbalances cannot be resolved primarily bilaterally; instead, a new, balanced multilateral agreement must be found. The World Trade Organization framework continues to provide an adequate basis, principles, and mechanisms for international trade, but it is necessary to better address the areas of the green transition, labor standards, and uneven development around the world. Even small countries can contribute their share to improving international institutions for more balanced and sustainable development in both developed and developing countries.
On the sidelines of the conference, Assoc. Prof. Matjaž Nahtigal also met with Mag. Mira Lesjak, Head of the Slovenian Consulate in Shanghai. The recent visit of a large Slovenian delegation to Shanghai, featuring representatives from ministries and numerous companies already operating in China or seeking new partners, was highlighted. Slovenia presented itself at the international fair with an emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and the quality of the Slovenian economy. Despite the uncertain international situation, Slovenia's trade with China also offers an opportunity to achieve a more balanced trade, which requires continuous efforts from all stakeholders and supporting institutions.
