On Monday a Statistical seminar was held in our INNOlab, organized by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS) and the Statistical Association. It was attended by 10 teachers from the Coast and Karst region.
It is intended for high school teachers who want to mentor students in a statistical competition - Evropean statistical competition. The games are primarily aimed at raising awareness of the importance of statistics in modern society and increasing statistical literacy among young people.
The introductory part of the event was prepared by Simona Klasinc, SURS. They presented a competition system that includes teams of up to three students in two categories: 1st and 2nd year students and 3rd and 4th year students. The games are first run at the national level by completing the tests and analyzing the data, and the best teams are ranked at the European level, where they produce video with statistics. This year's topic has not yet been determined, it will be known in January. Following the intruduction participants were presented with access to data through the SURS data portal, the main point being the correct preparation and use of data, with potential mentors also being alerted to frequent mistakes made by students.
The second part of the seminar, entitled A Short Trip to Beginner Statistics, was conducted by Katarina Muha, a lecturer at UP FM. The participants repeated the definitions of the basic statistical concepts and, based on the data, also learned the use and importance of the basic statistical methods. In conclusion, they have tried their hand at solving tasks from previous years.
After the seminar, the participants were visibly tired, but also satisfied with their knowledge. They estimated that this would also serve them in cooperation in the field of Youth Research, a school competition in research tasks, which is also under the auspices of the Faculty of Management.
